Sustainability:

We will grow our business profitably, responsibly and safely while protecting the environment, making wise use of our natural resources, and giving back to our communities.

Environmental Commitment

Safeguarding the air is a high priority for Smurfit-Stone. Responding proactively to concerns about greenhouse gas emissions, Smurfit-Stone joined the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), the “world’s first and North America’s only voluntary, legally-binding, rules-based greenhouse gas emission reduction and trading system.” By joining CCX, Smurfit-Stone has made a commitment to measure, report, and reduce GHG emissions, establish an emission reduction schedule, and participate in an annual emissions audit. We have already met Phase I of our CCX obligation and have reduced GHG emissions by 4% over the baseline years. By 2010, we will have met our obligation to reduce GHG by 6% from a 1999-2001 baseline. In fact, since 1995, we have reduced GHG by nearly 24%, cut particulate matter releases by 47%, and reduced fossil fuel use by 20%.

Smurfit-Stone also puts its money where its mouth is. Between 2000 and 2006, the company invested over $400 million just to comply with a set of air regulations known as the Cluster Rule.
