Smurfit-Stone creates sustainable packaging solutions by using recyclable and recycled fiber, utilizing renewable energy sources in manufacturing and implementing environmentally responsible raw material sourcing.
We work hard to reduce our environmental footprint wherever and whenever possible:
- In 2007 we handled a record 7 million tons of recycled fiber – making us one of the world’s largest recyclers.
- We have reduced energy consumption company-wide by more than 16% since 2000.
- Our nurseries distribute more than 24 million seedlings annually for planting on private and public lands.
- We are a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange and have been and continue to meet our commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- During the last two years, we have reduced our total air emissions per ton of product manufactured by approximately 4.5%.
- We have reduced our discharges to water, as measured by the amount of Biochemical Oxygen Demand and Total Suspended Solids in the effluent produced per ton of product, by more than 3%.
